An Update on our Funding
The city of San Francisco has recently changed their model for HIV prevention to a "Test and Treat" model. For the first time since NAAP's establishment in 1994, the city of San Francisco will NOT be funding HIV Prevention services at NAAP, nor do they have a plan to provide HIV Prevention services to the Native American community at large. NAAP is committed to continuing our services and is seeking alternative sources of funding, but needs your support if we are going to keep providing these vital services to our community! There are several ways you can help NAAP and the Native community and don't just stop at one, help with as many as you can:
Join NAAP's AIDS Walk Team
Another way to support NAAP and the Native Community is to join the NAAP team (team#7629) for the San Francisco AIDS Walk (held on July 17th, 2011) and raise money through your friends, family and co-workers. All funds raised by individuals on our team will be matched by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and given back to NAAP. That means every penny you raise comes back to NAAP! Can't make it to the walk? No problem, you can still fundraise on and offline and can pick up your fundraising gifts at NAAP the week following the SF AIDS Walk. Every dollar counts! So sign up and get started on your fundraising. Use your facebook, twitter or myspace accounts to raise funds electronically and help keep critical HIV prevention services in the Native community!
Sabbatical Announcement
The Native American AIDS Project’s long-time Executive Director, Joan BenoĆ®t, has been awarded a sabbatical from The California Wellness Foundation. Joan will take her sabbatical from July 1 through September 6, 2011.
The NAAP Board of Directors has appointed Gayle Burns as Interim Executive Director during Joan’s absence. “This is truly a gift, to be given time to spend with my family, to have the time to refresh and re-energize myself and re-focus priorities. We have worked hard at NAAP to build leadership in all of the staff and this is a great opportunity for Gayle, Anna and Andrew to put that leadership into practice.”
Eight nonprofit health-sector executives were recognized with The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) Sabbatical Program Award at an October luncheon ceremony in San Francisco. The leadership support program – now in its eighth year – provides eight organizations with grants of $35,000 each to cover salary and other expenses during their executive directors’ sabbaticals, which last a minimum of three months.
The program was created to support nonprofit leaders and seeks to improve the long-term effectiveness of health-focused nonprofits by providing their executives with the rest they need to continue to direct their organizations’ missions.
Administrative Days
NAAP's Executive Director is on sabbatical until September 6, 2011, leaving NAAP with only three full time staff members for the summer. In order to maintain our services and complete all the necessary program development and administrative duties, NAAP will be having Administrative days every Wednesday until September 7, 2011. Staff will be available to answer questions via phone and email, but the office will be closed to allow staff to effectively do their work and raise much needed funds to continue to provide vital services to our communities.

30 AIDS Campaign
NAAP is proud to be part of the 30 AIDS Campaign. San Francisco's leading HIV/AIDS service organizations have joined together and created 30AIDS - a campaign to raise awareness and money while paying tribute to those who passed away and the individuals who have helped along the way. Now is the time to act! Talk about HIV with your friends, volunteer at an AIDS Service Organization, or make a video about your experiences with HIV/AIDS. Silence only perpetuates stigma and stereotypes, speak out, be PROUD!
