About NAAP

Founded in 1994, the Native American AIDS Project is the only Native specific HIV organization in California. We provide culturally specific HIV prevention and CARE services to Native Americans in the state of California.

Staff and volunteers come from diverse communities with an indigenous understanding of cultural issues. The Native American AIDS Project embraces the entire community; youth, elders, men and women, gay, straight, two-spirited, sober and actively using.

All services draw upon Native cultural, spiritual, behavioral and medical traditions to communicate HIV prevention messages.
Native Americans living in San Francisco have the highest AIDS incidence (cases per 100,000) of any non-white ethnic group in The City. This diagnosis, compounded with other conditions such as homelessness, substance abuse and general poor health, require a sustained and culturally-sensitive response like the one provided to NAAP’s HIV Positive clients.

NAAP provides a vital link to case management, treatment advocacy, peer advocacy, mental health and primary medical care for HIV Positive Natives in San Francisco. NAAP also provides HIV prevention and social support to affected communities. Culturally appropriate services for Native Americans / Alaskan Natives in any stage of HIV disease who are living in The City and County of San Francisco, or incarcerated persons who intend to reside in San Francisco upon release or parole.
